Frequently Asked Questions
To support the standowners and to educate the consumers of fireworks legally sold on American Indian reservations.
What is the mission of www.indianfireworks.us?
What are Indian fireworks?
Indian fireworks include Class C or consumer fireworks not available in state safe-and-sane fireworks outlets: firecrackers, multi-shot aerial cakes, 500g cakes, bottle rockets, mortars or artillery shells, rockets and family packs.
What are the laws and rules on the reservation?
When you enter the boundaries of an Indian reservation, you are entering a land of multi-jurisdictions, including Tribal, Federal and perhaps non-Indian local jurisdiction. Behave yourself! In short, you should follow the normal rules of the road, obey any posted signs and respect property.
Can I light fireworks on the reservation?
Ask the standowner if there is an area to test or fire your purchased fireworks. Depending on the product, standowners will demo fireworks before you purchase (if they are not prohibited from tribal ordinance themselves). Never, ever light fireworks near a fireworks stand.
What is the difference between Class C (consumer) and Class B (display) fireworks?
Class B fireworks are for trained, licensed professional pyrotechnicians – not the general public. In short, display fireworks (1.3 g) have more explosive powder than consumer fireworks (1.4 g). Consumer fireworks are regulated by a federal agency, Consumer Products Safety Commission. Class B fireworks are regulated by other federal agencies, including Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
Can I buy M-80’s on an Indian reservation?
M-80’s are not legal anywhere – including Indian reservations. Explosive devices such as M-80’s, M-100’s, M-200’s, cherry bombs and tennis ball bombs are hand-made “bombs.” They are extremely dangerous. The sale, purchase and possession of these bombs will subject you to arrest by tribal and federal law enforcement. If you ask for these bombs at Indian firework stands, most standowners will assume that you are an undercover tribal police or ATF agent.
How do I find the fireworks stands?
Indian firework stand locations are like a river. It’s always there but it changes course over time. Since the advent of Indian casinos, non-Indian guests have grown more accustomed to visiting nearby reservations. Signage can range from excellent to non-existent. Feel free to follow the seasonal hand-made road signs or ask a local.
In fact, many firework stands may be located within eye-site of the casino or gas station. On many reservations, all the stands are located in one large area; while on others, the stands are scattered on the various roads approaching and within the reservation.
Are there bathrooms at the fireworks stands?
You should visit a restroom prior to entering the reservation. Most firework stand locations are like primitive campsites. You should ask the standowners if you can use a port-a-potty before you buy. There is an expectation that you buy something if you use a standowners port-a-potty. Tip: stop by the local tribal casino or gas station.
How can I bargain for the best deal?
If you like the service at your stand in terms of price, selection, advice and friendliness, its okay to ask for the standowners contact information.
Standowners are business people; they appreciate and REWARD repeat customers. Repeat customers buy the most and get the most.
Standowners also award large buyers. The rule of thumb is to buy as much as you can from a SINGLE standowner. In the buying process, you should be negotiate "throw-ins" (small cakes, sparklers and other novelties) or additional $$$ discounts as a reward for your patronage. These extra fireworks are proportional to the $$ size of your fireworks order. This is why you should shop at one stand.
Tell the standowner what you intend to do with the firework. The standowners are very knowledgeable in the quality and performance of the fireworks. For example, display products for a group of small children would differ than for mostly male adults. You may want to emphasize noise or prefer colorful displays.
Do standowners accept checks?
Some do; some don't. In Thunder City Mall, you can use a personal check if your name and address are printed on the check and match your photo ID. If you need to use an ATM machine, ATM's are available at the End of the Trail gas station and Lucky Eagle Casino.
What are the business hours of the fireworks stands?
Standsowners are basically on "Indian" time. This simply means that open and closing hours are not strictly fixed. Generally, stands are now open daily from early morning until late evening. You should call ahead if you arriving before 9 am or after 9 pm.
Are Indian fireworks sold after the 4th of July?
On the Chehalis Reservation, some stands are open several days after the 4th of July. Prices are steeply discounted at liquidating prices; and there are bargains; however, selection is limited.
Are Indian fireworks sold for New Year's Eve?
A few fireworks stands on Chehalis Reservation, say 1-5, open again in late December: from right the day after Christmas until New Year's Eve. You should email or call in advance for more information and/or an appointment.
Are fireworks safe?
All and any fireworks are inherently dangerous, since fireworks pose a threat to property and body. For example, the most frequently reported injury results from burns by the otherwise innocuous sparkler. Use common sense. Adults should be sober; and children should be closely supervised. Never hold fireworks in your hands. Keep a fire extinguisher, buckets of water or a working water hose nearby. Keep a safe distance from spectators and homes.
Can I use my fireworks in my community?
You must check with your local fire marshall, since local laws on fireworks vary widely from state to state, and even town to town. Indian fireworks are legal for sale on the Indian reservation. It is your responsibility to check the legality with your local jurisdiction in which you display your fireworks. Remember, explosive devices, such as M-80s, are illegal everywhere.
Can I legally transport Indian fireworks on the road?
In general, you can transport consumer (Class C) fireworks in your car in the USA. In Washington State, you may transport up to 2,000 lbs of consumer fireworks without displaying 1.4 g placards on your vehicle. Use common sense and transport fireworks in your trunk (and do not smoke in an area with fireworks!). Once again, check road signs and/or local jurisdictions for any restrictions, such as bridges, tunnels, airports, etc.
Aren't the best bargains just days before or on the 4th of July?
Contrary to "common sense," the best fireworks deals -- considering selection, availability and price -- go to the early bird shopper.
Why? Its a matter of supply and demand -- sprinkled with customer loyalty.
First, in the early weeks, there are more standowners than customers; whereas on the last weekend, there are more customers than standowners. Even regular, repeat customers get even a better deal when they come early.
Why? The standowner has more time without interruptions from browsing, bargain-hunting customers without any particular loyalty to a stand.
Second, the best and newest products are usually limited in supply -- even to the standowners. Remember, fireworks are from China; once a product is stocked-out, they are gone till next year. The most popular artillery shell packages, 500g cakes and family packs are the first to stock out -- usually before the last weekend.
In short, you may "feel" better bargaining on the last hectic days leading up to the 4th of July, but you can negotiate a great deal, just as well as earlier, and get a better selection of superior fireworks products. Remember, your loyalty to your favorite standowner will always get you the best deal. Afterall, standowners want to see you next year and every year after!
